In a new study published in Cell Reports , researchers at the University of California-Irvine have discovered a new link between intermittent fasting, our circadian clocks, and our metabolism. After analyzing the cell tissue of mice over 24 hour fast periods, they found that time without food affected their biological clocks and caused cellular responses sensitive to fasting. These reactions caused a reorganization of the genes in the skeletal muscle and liver, accelerating the metabolism.

The lead author of the study, Paolo Sassone-Corsi, a professor of biological chemistry at the UCI Medical School, explained in a statement that “the reorganization of genetic regulation by fasting may lead the genome to a more permissive state to anticipate food intake and thus boosting a new rhythmic cycle of gene expression. “

This means that intermittent fasting could boost changes in our metabolism through our circadian rhythms, which researchers suggest could positively affect our overall health and protect against age-related diseases.
